2020 has brought about a slew of devastating effects across the world. From financial troubles to physical and mental health concerns, COVID-19 has undoubtedly held a tight grip on everyone in one form or another. And while there hasn’t been enough time to effectively measure the damaging mental health issues caused by COVID, there are lessons to be learned from the SARS and MERS outbreak. During this time, common psychiatric symptoms identified in a study included insomnia (42 percent), anxiety (36 percent), depressed mood (33 percent), and confusion (28 percent). But these figures are not surprising. During these uncertain times, it’s simply natural for individuals to experience these mental health issues. And as clinical psychologist, Carla Manly, PhD, says:
“When feelings of fear are evoked, an individual will respond instinctively with a ‘fight or flight’ response.”
She continued: “When fear becomes chronic, the ‘fight or flight’ stress response remains chronic. This can create anxiety, ongoing stress, depression, suicidality. The individual may feel irritable, exhausted, anxious, hyper-vigilant, angry, and emotionally dysregulated.”
With the future still being uncertain, there may still be a long way to go when it comes to finding solace and better mental health. In the meantime, there are a few things you can do to reduce the effects of harrowing mental health issues during the pandemic.
The results of two studies conducted during COVID-19 have found that there are small things you can incorporate into your everyday life in order to improve your mental health.
1. Muscle Relaxation Exercises
At a hospital in China a small study found that those with COVID-19 who practiced muscle relaxation exercises were less prone to high levels of anxiety and had a better quality of sleep. An example of a muscle relaxation exercise is to take deep breaths (abdominal breathing), in through the nose and out through the mouth.
In a different study measuring the levels of anxiety during COVID-19; it was found that those who self-affirmed their values were less anxious than their control group.Self-affirmation is a way in which to use positive statements to overcome negative thoughts, and to believe that one has the ability to predict and control important outcomes.
3. The Benefits of Sex Toys
Embracing your sexuality and enjoying a delicious orgasm, either solo or with a partner, may seem purely biological and physical. In actuality, there are a ton of mental health benefits for those who place importance on their sexual wellness. For example: those who use sex toys. And during this worldwide pandemic, improving one’s mental health and getting off in the process is just like killing two birds with one stone.
- Sex toys reduce stress: a big benefit of the big “O” is that it releases a cocktail of feel-good hormones; like endorphins, dopamine, and oxytocin. These hormones bring about feelings of happiness, motivation, and reward. Sex, masturbation, and orgasm also induce the release of the hormone prolactin. This helps people feel calm, experience less stress, and fall asleep quicker.
- Sex toys increase body positivity and self-esteem: when you embrace your body and try new ways to get to know yourself and your pleasure zones, you’ll be able to experience more sexual bliss and body confidence. And according to Dr. Chris Donaghue, a licensed sex and relationship expert:
“When you know the ins and outs of your body — literally — you gain an appreciation for it. The human body is a fine-tuned work of art. Just the fact that the clitoris exists solely for pleasure is, in itself, extraordinary.”
She continued to say: “Those who masturbate weekly are more likely to feel positively about their looks and body than those who don’t. Sex toys allow you to experiment with different sensations, stimulation areas and simultaneous pleasure points in a safe manner, giving you the gift of knowing what makes you feel good. Then, you can repeat this roadmap with yourself or know exactly what to communicate to your partner.”
